On July 4, 1976, more than a hundred hostages, held at gunpoint in Entebbe, Uganda, were freed in a spectacular rescue operation and flown to safety in Israel, over 2000 miles away. Their captors were Arab and German terrorists, aided by the Ugandan army; their liberators were members of Israel's elite commando unit, Sayeret Matkal, simply known as "the Unit." Lt.-Col. Yoni (Jonathan) Netanyahu, the Unit's commander, earned world-wide fame in the wake of the operation's stunning success. He was the only Israeli soldier killed in the Entebbe raid.

As a brother of the rescue force's commander, and himself a member of the Unit, Iddo Netanyahu had ready access to the participants in the raid. He was able to obtain detailed accounts from the men of the Unit who, for the first time, described the planning and preparations for the mission and its near-perfect execution. What emerged from their accounts is a powerful and stirring story of how the daring undertaking was accomplished after only 48 hours of frantic preparations.

Yoni's Last Battle portrays the men who carried out an incredibly hazardous operation in far-away Africa. Above all, it depicts the heroic - and tragic - figure of their commander, Yoni.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Originally published in Hebrew in 1991, this book has been reissued in English to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Entebbe raid. In June 1976, an Air France jetliner was hijacked and forced to fly to Entebbe, Uganda, by terrorists. On July 4, 30 soldiers of the Israeli army known as "the Unit" successfully rescued over 100 Israeli and Jewish passengers held captive by the terrorists. Only the 30-year-old commander of the unit, Lt. Col. Jonathan (Yoni) Netanyahu, was killed. He was the brother of the author, who also participated in the raid, along with a third brother, Benjamin Netanyahu (later to become prime minister of Israel). The book is both an accurate, detailed account of the raid and a personal tribute to a brother and a hero. The fast-paced text offers numerous flashbacks of the three brothers' childhood and army service. Although some details and identities remain classified, the author was able to interview most of the unit's soldiers and others involved in the raid. This new edition contains transcripts of those interviews. The book lacks an index, but photos, drawings, and personal recollections assist in explaining this historical event. I first became interested in the story of Yoni, when I accidentally came across a copy of the Book entitled "The letters of Yoni". When I came across the book and read the subject matter, I remembered the story of the raid on Entebbe and the hijacking of the French airliner by German and Arab terrorists. I didn't read the book until I found out that we were on our way to Israel, while I was stationed aboard the USS Nimitz CVN 68, While in Israel, it was then when I realized, how different life in Israel was from the United States. I observed Israeli soldiers in and out at uniform carrying their weapons. While we were there PLO terrorists had planted a bomb on a bus and killed most of the Israelis that were on the bus. It then hit me how dangerous it was to live in Israel, surrounded On all sides by Arab nations, Who wanted to do nothing else, but to annihilate The nation of Israel and it's people. After I read the book, that is when I first held Yoni, with high regard and great respect.

Yoni's Last battle: The Rescue at Entebbe, 1976 - Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down, I had to force myself to close the book so that I did go to sleep or eat. Yoni was the brother of Benjamin Netanyahu Who is the prime minister of Israel. This book describes all the events and training that took place before the actual raid. It showed just how great a leader and strategies that Yoni was, it also showed all the trials and negativity that he was forced to overcome and getting his plan approved by his superiors and the Israeli cabinet and Prime Minister. This book is a detailed account of the raid, and how the hostages were freed and brought 2000 miles to safety Israel. One of the problems that Yoni had to overcome was the fear from the Israeli leadership that the raid would end in disaster, and causing the death of all the hostages and the annihilation of the rescue force. Failure would be disastrous to the nation of Israel and would cause death of the best trained soldiers that Israel had to offer.

In this book you get an intimate look at the leadership and capabilities of Yoni as a leader and the man. So get a glimpse of the training and the man that went on the mission. To me this was an outstanding book that covered most aspect of the preparation and the execution of the raid itself. It also show the inner turmoil that Yoni felt at the time. Like most men and military leaders it died young his greatness and ability we're not appreciated until his death.(less)

The world is in great need of courageous men like Yoni who gave his life to save others. His life and death stand as a testimony of what one man can do to lead and inspire others to help the helpless. A must read!

This is a very important book: powerful, moving, a splendid biography of a key figure in Israel’s history. So why only four stars?

Because of the typos or, to be more precise, the un-corrected errors of scanning and OCR (optical character recognition) in the Kindle edition. These are very rare in the first half of the book, but in the latter half, they begin to appear, and in some sections, they come thick and fast. It is mortifying to see such a fine piece of writing defaced in this manner.

Frankly, the publishers should be ashamed of themselves. They own it to their customers, to the author, to Amazon, to the Netanyahu family and to all those who honour Yoni Netanyahu’s memory to re-issue this ebook with every single typo corrected.

A book that should be read, both for understanding the complexity and astonishing success of this raid, but also to get to know such a remarkable young man. Lucky were the men who were trained and mentored by Yoni!!

Written by Lt. Colonel Yoni Netanyahu's younger brother, Iddo, this is the definitive history of the hastily planned and executed 1976 Israeli Raid on Entebbe. Much of this is repeated in the author's later book entitled Entebbe: A Defining Moment in the War on Terrorism (see my review).

As the raiding party's fallen commander, Jonathan (Yoni) Netanyahu has achieved legendary status both within Israel and the rest of the world. Iddo, the commander's younger brother, also a veteran of the elite Israeli commando unit, Sayeret Matkal (known simply as "the Unit") which was commanded by brother Yoni during the Entebbe operation, the author had unique access to military secrets of the operations by way of interviews with the operation's participants, planners, and politicians.

The author is also a radiologist and the youngest of the three Netanyahu brothers, including the former (and probably next) Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin ("Bini") Netanyahu. All three brothers share a partial education at elite American Universities, fame in Israel as soldiers and veterans of "the Unit," and, in the case of Benjamin, the Prime Ministry itself.

A fascinating story, and equally fascinating book. Highly recommended, although if you read only one, I would suggest the updated version entitled Entebbe, A Defining Moment in the War on Terrorism.
Entebbe: A Defining Moment in the War on Terrorism--The Jonathan Netanyahu Story

For those interested in a video version, I would recommend the fairly accurate portrayal of the operation in the 1976 version Raid on Entebbe

Reading the biography of Yoni Netanyahu written by his youngest brother Iddo Netanyahu provides a unique perspective on the events during the hostage taking and preparation for the raid on Entebbe. The three brothers Yoni, Benjamin and Iddo all served in this special forces unit of the Israel Defense Forces and this book shows a closeness as brothers and bonds that take place among men who go through military training and service together. The book is very hard to put down and over two-thirds of the book is spent on the mission's military preparation, picking personnel, political support, training, briefings, thinking strategy, intelligence gathering, etc. and the people going on the mission still do not believe it will happen and/or even succeed. The message to the world from this book and the raid on Entebbe is terrorists and terrorism will not win when the people or nation subject to the terrorism fights back smartly to protect their people.

Written by the brother of the commanding officer of the rescue, the only soldier to be killed, the brother was also in "the Unit". That's Sayeret Matkal, the Israeli equivalent of the UK SAS or the US Navy Seals, supported by Paratroops and elite infantry. This tells the most complete story of the Rescue of more than 100 hostages, 2,000 miles away. The Israelis had few options, all involving an immense risk, even acceding to the terrorists demands was an immense risk. The author does not shy from revealing the dire consequences of failure. Almost 40 years later and ever increasing tragedies, countries reeling from senseless massacre of their citizens, yet none are willing to take such bold steps. They tut, tut, very seriously, but little else. Pity.

I read this book many years ago and subsequently visited Israel and Yoni's memorial in Jerusalem. It has stayed with me for many years and I purchased this recently for my husband to read. He has found it as moving and fascinating as I did and read it several times. A very worthy read and an amazing man, well written by his brother.

Written by Yoni's brother Iddo this book gives a lot of insight into Yoni as a person. It has research and quotes from the PM through top forces officers to everyday members involved in the raid on Entebbe. It is very factual but easy to read style. A great book that I'd highly recommend to others.
